Our Method

The aim of this project is to examine the water scarcity in UAE. The team will use several data gathering methods to answer the main research questionwhich is to examine the impact of water scarcity in the country. Many factors will be tested to fulfill the purpose of our study. The effects of water scarcity in the U.A.E will be evaluated by undertaking both primary and secondary research methods in order to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. This evaluation will be done by:
·         Visiting the ADWEA (Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority) to conduct interviews and gather data regarding the usage of water in different sectors of the economy. The data gathering will be carried out on 11/4/2010 at 1:00 PM.
·         Visiting the GSD department in the Habshan Building to conduct interviews and gather data regarding the water consumption in the PI(Petroleum Institute). This will be done on 10/4/2010 on daytime.
·         Paying a visit to the Masdar city to gather data regarding their waste water management, as Masdar city uses a complete water recycling method for its various water consumption. This will be carried out on the fourth week of March.
·         Conducting a survey questionnaire that will be handed out to the PI students to be familiar with the water use pattern among the youngsters residing in the U.A.E. The sample size will be 30 respondents from the male campus in the PI. The survey will contain both open and close ended questions. The survey will take place in the main campus of the PI between the 17thand 24th of March 2011. In addition, 5 students will be interviewed to determine their level of awareness regarding this issue.
·          Interviewing a number of experts in the PI and outside the PI’s campus whose expertise could provide us with different opinions regarding the topic. An interview will be held with Dr Ahmed Murad, the head of Al Ain University's geology department and author of various articles regarding water scarcity in the country, via email. Our team will also interview Mr. Zubayr, an earlier employee for a desalination centre in the UAE, and currently a lab technician in the PI.
·         Recording average water consumed per hour by one of the team member, which will then be calculated in terms of liters/day and compared to another country’s statistics.
It must be noted that all the interviews will be audio/video recorded. The results gathered will be classified as quantitative or qualitative data to be then represented in charts, statistics or statements. Finally, the data will be analyzed and interpreted to formulate recommendations and solutions in order to reduce or solve the issue of water scarcity in the country.

Our Budget

In order to do a professional project and maintain the same level and quality, our client should be informed about the total cost of the project. As a result, the client will not be surprised or suspected about the cost. This will assure mutual understanding between our team and the client. The total cost of this project is 7850 AED.
Considering the efforts and skills of each team member, we calculated a reasonable payment of 40 AED per hour for each team member. This amount was based on the fact that an expatriate graduate student working for ADNOC earns around 11,000 AED per month, working an average of 8 hours daily. This amount is equivalent to 70 AED per hour, and we as undergraduate students are almost half way to graduation, and thus we expect at least half of that amount to be paid. This table below shows what our team needs for the project, how much it approximately costs and the reasons for this cost.

Our Purpose

The specific purpose of this study is to examine the factors that affect the quantity and quality of water here in the UAE to limit the reasons behind water scarcity. Moreover, this study aims to determine the level of awareness regarding this issue which will help us understand the magnitude of this problem here in the country.

This project covers three main aspects: water resources, water consumption and causes of water scarcity. Due to the differences in water quantity, water quality, water consumption and population growth among the countries around the globe, our results might not be applicable outside the UAE. There are some factors that have not been covered in this study such as global warming, climate change and topography.

Why in the UAE ?

Water is a fundamental part of our lives. It is the most essential component for sustenance after oxygen. It sustains humans’ health, food production and economic development. This unique natural resource has supplies and sources, economic, social and political characteristics that make it different from the other existing resources. Recent economical developments in the world are somewhat based on the availability of water in sufficient quantity and that’s why water deficiency is considered an important issue in the developing regions.
Water scarcity is the moment in time, at which there is scarcity in water supply, water access or water usability that the total demand by all sectors, including the environment, cannot be fully satisfied. Desertification, land degradation, increasing population, climate change anddrought have negative impact on theavailability, quantity and quality of waterresources which result in water scarcity.
In the last few decades, life in the UAE has changed dramatically. Development and the increase in population during the last 20 years have resulted in increased consumption of large quantities of ground water for irrigation, industrial and domestic. In comparison, UAE has one of the highest water consumption levels in the world compared to Western countries due to climatic conditions and high per capita income [6]. The demand is increasing year-on-year due to growth of population and growth in tourism, as the UAE also supports 'transit population' which increases the demand of water consumption.

Since water scarcity has become a big concern here in the UAE, our team decided to go deeper in this issue to understand its causes and provide some recommendations and solutions that will hopefully solve this problem in the country.
